Lost in Shangri-La by Mitchell Zuckoff (TLC Tour)

The Skinny: This book will make anyone want to learn more about WWII.

Lost in Shangri-La is an exciting tale about a rescue during World War II. When a helicopter containing military personnel crashes in New Guinea, only three individuals survive. In addition to healing from injuries, the survivors must interact with the natives, a group of people whose culture is unique and complex. While navigating the cultural differences, the three survivors must wait until rescue arrives.

Zuckoff drew from primary sources to create an accurate story. This attention to detail is what captivates readers. The writing is vivid and the descriptions are so rich that I had no trouble crafting wonderful mental images of the places and events that are described. It is clear that Zuckoff is a talented writer who balances factual information with beautiful language. Each of the characters is well-developed and had unique voices.

I greatly enjoyed Lost in Shangri-La, and I recommend it to anyone who is looking to read a thrilling tale. This is the type of book that would make an excellent movie. The inclusion of factual information provides readers with a look at an event during WWII that is often never mentioned. Prior to reading, I was unaware of the rescue efforts that occurred, and I am pleased that I learned something new.  Zuckoff is an excellent writer who created a story that is memorable and enthralling. You should definitely read it.
